Swedish Ärtsoppa

Last night I was invited over to MJ's place for drinks and a proper Swedish meal. For starters we were served Toast Skagen, which is a mayonaise or sour creme based shrimp salad served on buttered toast with some roe on top. Even though the dish is named after a small fishing town in the North of Denmark, it was invented by Swedish chef Tore Wretman, and it is a classic Swedish starter.

The main course was another Swedish classic namely Ärtsoppa (Yellow Pea Soup), a dish which has been eaten in Sweden since the 13th century. The main ingredients of the dish are yellow peas, onion and ham. When served a bit of mustard is added to the soup and knäckebröd is normally served as a side.

Ärtsoppa is said to have been one of August Strindberg's favorite dishes. The dish is normally served on Thursdays together with pancakes.

MJ did a great job preparing these two dishes, and we were all vey impressed with his cooking skills.
